The Luella Hannan Memorial Foundation, located on Woodward Ave. one block south of campus, has its offices in the Hannan House, a multi-service senior center that provides educational programming and social services to older adults in the central city. WSU faculty and students have partnered with the Hannan House for the past 10 years. Previous service-learning projects have included collecting oral histories and writing biographies, creating a Web site on the history of Detroit's black Boy Scout troops, conducting research and writing scripts for the SeniorVoice radio program, tutoring and assisting in the computer lab.
For the 2006-2007 academic year, the following service-learning projects are available at the Hannan House:
Creative Aging Project: WSU students are needed to interview older adults about their artwork and other creative endeavors and to take photographs for a traveling display on late-life creativity. This project is ongoing and will continue through the fall and winter semesters. For details on a Directed Study for three service-learning credits, contact Prof. Ruth Ray, Department of English, at ruth.ray@wayne.edu.
Civic Engagement Project: WSU students are needed to interview people and conduct research for a Town Meeting on civic engagement to be held at the Hannan House and broadcast on public radio. For student participants, this project entails two months of research and interviews in September and October and attendance at the Town Meeting and a follow-up discussion in November.
